Chisinau, 6 November /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova and Latvia will cooperate in the sectors of education, culture, science, youth and sport, according to an agreement signed by Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Andrei Galbur and Latvian Foreign Affairs Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs in Chisinau today.
At a news briefing, the Moldovan official said that the discussion had been productive. “I thanked for messages of solidarity received from Latvian officials on the process of Moldova’s European integration. Presently, there are more projects worth about 100,000 euros underway in our country with Latvia’s support. At the same time, we referred to preparations for the Eastern Partnership Summit, due in Brussels later this month. Also, we had discussions on the economic dimension and agreed to suggest that the ambassadors of the two countries come up with ideas to stimulate the cooperation relations between business people,” Andrei Galbur said.
For his part, Edgars Rinkēvičs noted that the agreement signed today would allow young people from Moldova to come to study in Latvia and subsequently come back to Moldova to help for country’s well-being. “At the meeting, we also discussed the existence of new fields of development in the economic sector; I mean the transport, tourism, pharmaceutical area and the one of wood processing. Also, Latvia provides assistance in the agricultural sector, regional development and judicial system. I reiterated the fact that we would continue providing Moldova with support in its European integration and Transnistrian conflict settlement. At the same time, I ascertained that a string of reforms should be carried out to improve the citizens’ living standards,” the Latvian foreign affairs minister said.
The 25th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Moldova and Latvia is marked this year.
