Latvia reaffirms support for Moldova's European integration

Chisinau, 7 November /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Pavel Filip today had a meeting with Latvian Foreign Affairs Minister Edgars Rinkevics, on a working visit to Chisinau. The discussions were focused on developments in the implementation of reforms in Moldova. In the context, the PM thanked for the political support and the financial assistance provided by Latvia, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.    

“Latvia is an example for us, taking into account how quickly it moved with the reforms, with modernization and overcoming the transition stage, becoming an EU member. You understand the problems faced by our country, our aspirations and we further rely on support,” Pavel Filip said. The prime minister stressed that it was necessary to ensure an efficient communication as to the reforms and the European way.   

For his part, the foreign affairs minister of Latvia reiterated the firm support in the process of Moldova’s European integration and highlighted the importance of achieving tangible results. In particular, Edgars Rinkevics appreciated the reform of the public administration, stressing that the latter was decisive for having strong institutions and would boost the carrying out of the other reforms, just as it happened in Latvia.   

As for the economic dimension, the officials spoke out for increasing the Moldovan-Latvian trade, in the conditions provided by the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area. Another sector of interest in the bilateral ties is education. During the visit by the Latvian foreign affairs minister, the sides signed a new bilateral agreement on cooperation in the fields of education, culture, youth and sport, under which Latvia will provide scholarships to students and teachers from Moldova.
