Moldova's ambassador to Russia called to Chisinau for indefinite period

Chisinau, 18 December /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova’s Ambassador to Russia Andrei Neguta has been called to Chisinau for an indefinite period. The Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry (MAEIE) made statements to this effect today.

“Given the cases of harassment and intimidation of officials and political figures from Moldova by Russia’s authorities, their boosting on the last period and the lack of official reactions to repeated petitions by the Moldovan authorities on these cases, MAEIE ruled to call Ambassador Andrei Neguta to Chisinau for consultations for an indefinite period,” a MAEIE press release reads.   

According to the communiqué, during discussions, decision-makers are to consider ways of overcoming the emerged situation, avoiding, in the long run, actions able to undermine the Moldovan-Russian relations, which the Moldovan authorities want to be friendly, of mutual trust and respect.   

Andrei Neguta took over the office of Moldova’s Ambassador to Russia in last May. Earlier, Neguta had held the position of head of the parliament’s commission for foreign policy and after Igor Dodon was elected president of Moldova, he also took over the post of Moldovan president’s adviser for foreign policy.    

In late May 2017, five Russian diplomats were declared undesirable persons in Moldova. The expulsion of the Russian diplomats took place amid tense relations between Chisinau and Moscow. In early last March, Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu and Prime Minister Pavel Filip summoned the Russian Ambassador to Moldova, to present him a protest note on abusive actions against Moldovan officials.
