Fifty five Moldovan settlements disconnected from power supply because of last night snowfall

Chisinau, 18 January /MOLDPRES/ – A number of 55 localities in 12 districts of Moldova have been left without electricity due to heavy snowfall last night.

Interviewed by the agency, Diana Tutu, the press officer of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU), stated that until 09:00 remained with no electricity localities from Ialoveni, Criuleni, Orhei, Hincesti, Telenesti, Stefan Voda, Anenii Noi, Cahul, Cantemir, Basarabeasca, Leova, Ungheni and UTA Gagauz – Yeri. "Specialist teams work to restore electricity supply. The employees of IGSU territorial subdivisions with the National Police Inspectorate (INP) patrol monitor snow – drifting road sections and station the heavy truck drivers who can stumble. The situation caused by the weather conditions is intensively monitored, with three crisis cells created within IGSU," said Tutu.

According to the Customs Service’s info, the customs stations Giurgiulesti 1 and Ceadir – Lunga 2 temporarily ceased their activity in connection with the lack of electricity in corresponding customs posts on the territory of Ukraine caused by a failure in the distribution networks.

Traffic restrictions are also recorded through customs station Molovata where, due to the strong wind, the activity of the ferry connecting Molovata Veche and Molovata Noua is stopped.

Asked by the agency, sources from the Centre for Meteorological Forecasts of the State Hydrometeorological Service (SHS) said that almost all over Moldova has been the Orange Code of sleet and snowfall, the amount of rainfall is 20-25 l/m2. The abundant snowfall will only slow down towards the evening of 18 January 2018 and weather will warm up slightly in upcoming days.
