As many as 173 Moldovan settlements disconnected from power supply because of heavy snowfall

Chisinau, 18 January /MOLDPRES/ - A number of 173 settlements from 19 Moldovan districts are disconnected from power supply in the wake of the heavy snowfall.
Contacted by MOLDPRES, the press officer of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU), Diana Tutu, has said that, till 11:00, the number of villages in blackout had increased from 55 to 173. “Settlements from the districts Ialoveni, Criuleni, Orhei, Hancesti, Telenesti, Stefan Voda, Anenii Noi, Cahul, Cantemir, Basarabeasca, Leova, Ungheni, etc. and the Autonomous Territorial Unit Gagauz-Yeri remain disconnected from power supply. Specialized teams work to re-establish the electricity supply,” Tutu noted.
According to Diana Tutu, at present too, IGSU employees continue working to de-block and clean from snow the transport means which got stuck on some roads.” “Three transport means were towed by firemen today morning on roads from the Soldanesti district. Also, because of the bad weather, an ambulance with a three-month-old patient skid from the road. The intervention of de-blocking the ambulance was carried out by firemen and rescuers of the Emergency Situations Section from Rezina. The help of IGSU specialists was needed also in the Criuleni district, where a mini-bus got into a ditch. Rescuers carried out the de-blocking operation. According to operative information, more lorries are stopped by authorities at the entrance into the Anenii Noi town, in order to avoid their burial in snow,” Tutu added.
According to data by the Border Police, because of snow and lack of electric energy on the Ukrainian side, more border checkpoints ceased working in southern Moldova. The border checkpoints Ceadar-Lunga-Maloyaroslavets, Ceadar-Lunga-Noviye Trayani, Mirnoe-Tabaki, Etulia-Nagornoe are presently closed. The customs checkpoint Giurgiulesti-Reni resumed work.
The Customs Service informed about limiting of movement through the wharf-type customs checkpoint Molovata, where the ferry, linking the settlements Molovata Veche and Molovata Noua, ceased working because of the strong wind.
Weather forecasters announced Orange Code of sleet and snow for almost all over Moldova for today.
