Moldovan parliament speaker continues demarches for traffic security

Chisinau, 19 January /MOLDPRES/ - The cut in the number of victims of the road traffic accidents and a management of the traffic safety due to include the best international practices are some of the subjects discussed by Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu at meetings with World Bank Country Manager for Moldova Anna Akhalkats, representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and Economics and Infrastructure Ministry.
According to the parliament’s communication and public relations, the parliament speaker, who is ambassador for traffic safety, pointed out the need of a long-term vision which is to include institutional coordination, good international practices and policies of traffic safety able to reduce the number of road traffic accidents’ victims. According to Candu, a general framework of regulation, approximation to the EU traffic safety policies and an in-depth approaching of the subject are necessary, given that, during the next months, the repair of more important road segments will start.
Andrian Candu appreciated a study, made by the World Bank, for strengthening the management of the Traffic Safety in Moldova, which, inter alia, presents also the zones of high risk from the current road infrastructure. The parliament speaker informed that more actions would be organized this year, including on parliamentary platform and through parliamentary control mechanisms, to establish a space of traffic safety in Moldova.
Last year, Andrian Candu, in his capacity of ambassador for traffic safety, promoted a campaign of informing and raising awareness, jointly with partners and civil society. Within this campaign, exhibitions were organized, materials about the risk of high speed were broadcast, reflectors were distributed and demarches were made for the additional endowment with road markings of crosswalks, especially nearby schools.
Andrian Candu was appointed Ambassador for Traffic Safety by the Eastern Alliance for Safe and Sustainable Transport in 2017. Moldova signed the United Nations resolution on declaring the years 2011-2020 as “decade of actions in traffic safety sector” and assumed responsibility resulting from it, among which also the goal to cut by 50 per cent the number of road traffic accidents till 2020, access to safe, accessible and durable transport until 2030.
