Chisinau, 5 February /MOLDPRES/- Moldova and Romania could create a mixed battalion for emergencies. Romanian Defence Minister Mihai Fifor made the statement at a today’s conference held in Chisinau jointly with Moldovan Defense Minister Eugen Sturza.

The two officials have reviewed issues related to bilateral military cooperation, as well as cooperation in international military organizations.

“We discussed ways which Romania could help us to strengthen the capabilities of the National Army. Also, we approached issues related to cooperation in military education and participation of Moldovan soldiers in EU crisis management operations, jointly or with the support of Romania. This intention requires careful preparation,” Sturza said.

He noted that besides the support provided to the National Army, the Romanian government has carried out several projects beneficial to the citizens, including the NATO project for destruction of pesticides. “Romania has contributed by 850,000 euros for repackaging and destruction of pesticides. The cooperation between the Romanian and Moldovan armies is important for security of our country and must remain the same”, Sturza said.

The Romanian official pointed out that the military relations between Moldova and Romania are excellent, and the Bucharest government remains a fierce supporter of the Chisinau authorities. “Moldova is a strategic partner for us, not just a strategic state. I assure you of our entire support,” Fifor said.

He said that the perspective of the creation of a mixed battalion for emergency situation is considered, the more that Romania already has experience in this regard with the Romanian-Hungarian joint peacekeeping battalion and the TISA battalion. “I have proposed to my counterpart a model of cooperation we have for the TISA battalion, and we need to analyze exactly what will be the destination of this battalion”, Fifor said.

Fifor pays an official visit to Moldova, following an invitation of Sturza.
