Moldovan police purchases ten vehicles for transporting detainees

Chisinau, 12 February /MOLDPRES/ – The police purchased 10 vehicles for transporting detainees. Those ones were sent to territorial police inspectorates (IP) today.

At a press conference, the head of general inspectorate of police (IGP), Alexandru Pinzari, specified that cars were equipped in accordance with international standards within human rights and prevention of ill-treatment and abuse of detainees.

"The vehicles have air conditioning systems. These ones were reestablished in the country, so their cost was lower. This year, therenwill be purchased another 15 vehicles, so all old vehicles will be replaced for transport of detainees," said Pinzari.

At his turn, State Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) in the field of public order and security, prevention and fight against crime, Dorin Purice, said that cars were assembled according to recommendations of international institutions and NGOs.

"The transport units were assigned to territorial police inspectorates of: Anenii Noi, Balti, Cahul, Causeni, Cimislia, Criuleni, Edinet, Orhei, Ungheni and Chisinau. Also, a set of special equipment was purchased for employees involved into escort process, namely anti – gas masks and bulletproof vests," said Dorin Purice.

The cars were got with almost MDL 9 million, money provided by EU. These ones were procured in the context of implementation of police development strategy for 2016 – 2020 and implementation of activities provided within Action Plan on reduction of cases of maltreatment, abuse and discrimination of persons in police custody for 2017 – 2020.

The European Union will provide up to €51 million to support implementation of key elements of police development strategy. Before this amount is available, the government of Moldova must meet certain conditions and achieve measurable results on police development, as set out in agreements between the EU and national authorities.
