Chisinau, 14 March /MOLDPRES/ - More than 7,000 offences were committed by drunk people in Moldova in 2017. The head of the public security general directorate at the General Police Inspectorate, Marin Maxian, made statements to this effect at a news conference today.

The figure accounts for over 20 per cent of those about 33,000 offences committed in all. The data is contained in a map on consequences of the consumption of alcohol, worked out by policemen.

“The map includes data about the offences committed by drunk people all over the country, segregated in districts and municipalities. According to the map, most offences committed by drunk people are regarded light and 89 per cent are offences in the transport sector, where driving drunk prevails,” Maxian said.

According to Marin Maxian, the districts from central Moldova record most offences committed by drunk people and the figure is of 819 offences in the Chisinau municipality.

“The map was elaborated in order to inform and make responsible the community, civil society and competent authorities about the consequences of the consumption of alcohol. They are to undertake concrete actions for the prevention and combating of this scourge. At the same time, the map will allow better planning prevention actions of the Police, in order to cut the number of offences committed by drunk people,” Marin Maxian added.

Data by the World health Organization shows that Moldova is one of the countries with the highest level of consumption of alcohol internationally, with 16.8 litres of alcohol per capita annually.
