Democratic Party says Moldova cannot get status of observer at Eurasian Union without application submitted by authorities

Chisinau, 15 May /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova cannot get the status of observer within the Eurasian Economic Union without an application submitted by the authorities and a request to this end has not been made. Thus, the statement by President Igor Dodon, made at a visit to Sochi, alleging that Moldova was accepted as observer in the Eurasian Union, has no legal power. The spokesman for the Democratic Party of Moldova (PDM), Vitalie Gamurari, made statements to this effect at the end of a PDM weekly meeting today.

According to Gamurari, Moldova is a parliamentary country and no decision on its participation in international organizations or in international treaties can be taken without the agreement on behalf of the parliament and government. “None of these institutions submitted any application for Moldova to receive the concerned status. The declarations made by Igor Dodon are statements in his capacity of private person, as he cannot represent Moldova, in the context in which he has no approval on behalf of the parliament and government. The country’s president cannot decide the strategic course for Moldova proceeding from his personal preferences at all,” Gamurari said.

He specified that PDM maintained its stance and informs that “the European vector of Moldova remains unchanged.”

“This is the will of Moldova’s citizens, is the will assumed by certain international agreements and through Moldova’s Association Agreement with the European Union, which cannot be cancelled only by the wish of a single person,” Gamurari noted.

During a visit paid to Sochi, head of state Igor Dodon said that Moldova had been accepted as observer within the Eurasian Economic Union.
