Italy today marks National Day

Chisinau, 2 June /MOLDPRES/ - The Day of Proclamation of the Italian Republic (1946) – unitary state in the southern Europe, is marked today.
Italy has an area of 301,388 square km and a temperate climate; due to the form of its continental part, the residents of Italy name the country lo Stivale (Boot). With 61 million residents, Italy is the fifth most populated country of Europe. It is a quite developed country and is the third biggest economy in the Euro zone and the eighth in the world in terms of the nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The state plays a leading role in the world military, cultural and diplomatic affairs and is regarded a major regional power. Italy is one of the founding members and one of the leading members of the European Union, being also member of more international institutions.
During the Renaissance, the Italian culture flourished, producing scholars, artists and people with many and varied knowledge, such Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo, Michelangelo and Machiavelli. The Italian explorers like Marco Polo, Columbus and Vespucci, discovered new routes to the Far East and the New World, contributing to the age of great discoveries for Europeans.
Italy became republic after a referendum held on 2 June 1946 and since then the event has been marked as Republic Day. This was the first time when the Italian women got right to vote.
The diplomatic relations between Moldova and Italy were established on 21 February 1992.
Official statistics shows that, in January-July 2017, Moldovan exports to Italy amounted to 110.7 million dollars, while the imports from Italy stood at 190.4 million dollars.
According to data by the State Registration Chamber, as many as 1,349 enterprises with Italian capital work in Moldova and the investments with Italian capital amount to 1,724 million lei.
