Protest against cancellation of new local polls held in Moldovan capital

Chisinau, 26 June /MOLDPRES/ - More people today protested outside the Chisinau city hall, discontented with the ruling by the judges of the Supreme Court of Justice not to validate the new local polls in the Moldovan capital.
The protesters demanded that the authorities validate the mandate by Andrei Nastase – the candidate who the largest number of votes in the runoff of the elections.
The people who came to the protest shouted more slogans, among which “we want the mayor we have voted for” and “our vote has been stolen.”
Andrei Nastase and the leader of the Action and Solidarity Party, Maia Sandu, gave speeches at the action. Sandu urged the demonstrators to protest peacefully. ‘We start a new stage of our life. We will fight for truth and we will go throughout the country to speak to people,” Maia Sandu said.
Andrei Nastase thanked the citizens who came to the protest for support and solidarity. “Thank you for being here. We want to live in a democratic state. It is not only about a mandate of mayor; it is about the future of our country!,” Nastase said.
During the event, the Stefan cel Mare blvd and more streets from Chisinau were blocked.
The magistrates of the Supreme Court of Justice on 25 June declared the new local polls from the Moldovan capital as illegal and null and the mandate of mayor was invalidated. The main reason represents the lives made on a social network by the mayor-elect, Andrei Nastase, on the election day, through which he urged citizens to go to vote.
The local polls took place in two rounds, on 20 May and 3 June. After the runoff, Andrei Nastase picked up 52.08 per cent of the Chisinau residents’ votes and his counter-candidate Ion Ceban got 47.43 per cent.
