Chisinau, 26 June /MOLDPRES/- The Central Election Commission (CEC) informs that it took note of the decision of the Chisinau Court on 19 June, which became irrevocable by the conclusion of the Supreme Court of Justice on 25 June, which did not confirm the legality of the local elections for the Chisinau mayor office.

According to a communiqué issued by CEC, the meeting cannot be summoned earlier because "some CEC members are on business trip and others on ordinary vacation”.

Yesterday, magistrates of the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ) maintained the decision of the Court of Appeal and declared the local elections in the capital as illegal and null. The SCJ decision is irrevocable. All court hearings on this issue took place amid protests organized by supporters of Andrei Năstase, the candidate who won the largest number of votes in the runoff.

The local elections were held in two rounds on 20 May and 3 June. After the runoff, Andrei Nastase picked up 52.08% of votes, and his counter-candidate Ion Ceban 47.43%.

According to the legislation in force, no new local elections can be held this year, so the capital will be headed by an interim mayor. At present, the city hall is headed by Deputy Mayor Ruslan Codreanu.

The planned elections for the Chisinau mayor's office will be held next summer.
