Chisinau, 26 June /MOLDPRES/ - The U.S. Embassy in Moldova has taken knowledge of the ruling by the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ) to maintain the decision on invalidating the new local polls in Chisinau.
„The free, fair and transparent elections represent the foundation of any democracy and must comply with the international norms. Any alleged infringements must be approached in a way which observes the rule of law state and the democratic principles, including the people’s will expressed through elections,” the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau said on a social network.
According to the diplomatic mission, “the judicial experience is a principal democratic principle and the ruling strengthened the public perception on the political interference in the juridical system of Moldova.”
The magistrates of the Supreme Court of Justice on 25 June declared the new local polls from the Moldovan capital as illegal and null and the mandate of mayor was invalidated. The main reason represents the lives made on a social network by the mayor-elect, Andrei Nastase, on the election day, through which he urged citizens to go to vote.
The local polls took place in two rounds, on 20 May and 3 June. After the runoff, Andrei Nastase picked up 52.08 per cent of the Chisinau residents’ votes and his counter-candidate Ion Ceban got 47.43 per cent.
