Moldovan defence ministry, UN Women Moldova to promote gender equality in security, defence sector

Chisinau, 17 July /MOLDPRES/ - The Defence Ministry and UN Women (United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women) will consolidate cooperation to promote the gender equality in the security and defence sector. A memorandum to this effect was signed in Chisinau today.
The document provides for the carrying out of more activities aimed at strengthening the cooperation between the two institutions concerning the implementation of the intervention area, Gender Equality in Defence and Security Sector of the strategy of ensuring the equality between men and women in Moldova for 2017-2021.
Colonel, head of directorate at the Defence Ministry Alexandru Roman said that UN Women would provide support for carrying out the national programme on the implementation of the Resolution 1325 of the UN Security Council on Women, Peace and Security for 2018-2021.
According to the aforementioned ministry, the collaboration between the two entities will be focused, in particular, on the reduction of stereotypes concerning the woman’s role in the security and defence sector, enhancing possibilities for women and men from the system to combine the professional life with the family one, prevention and fighting discrimination, sexual harassment, developing institutional capacities for the integration of the gender dimension in the security and defence policies and backing women’s participation in the process of consolidation of peace and within peacekeeping missions.
The document was signed by State Secretary at the Defence Ministry Vladimir Iliev and Resident Representative of UN Women in Moldova Asya Varbanova for a three-year period. The act could be extended for two years.
