Chisinau launches anthology of poetry from Moldova published in Canada

Chisinau, 16 August /MOLDPRES/ – A volume titled "Basarabia sufletului meu – o colectie de poezie din R. Moldova" (Bassarabia of my soul – a collection of poetry from Moldova), published in Romanian and English at a publishing house in Toronto, Canada, was released at Public Library Onisifor Ghibu in Chisinau today.

The anthology was composed by writer and publisher Maria Tonu, a native Moldovan, established in Toronto, and Romanian translator Daniel Ionita, established in Sydney, Australia, which is also president of the Romanian – Australian Academy of Culture. The lyrics were translated by Daniel Ionita, Eva Foster, Daniel Reynaud and Rochelle Bews.

Attending the event, translator Daniel Ionita has specified that the idea of making this anthology belongs to Maria Tonu. "Previously, I published a bilingual anthology of poets in Romania, and then she proposed to make an anthology of poets in Moldova", said Daniel Ionita. In context, writer and editor Maria Tonu said that the volume includes lyrics signed by 42 authors: Grigore Vieru, Dumitru Matcovschi, Nicolae Dabija, Leonida Lari, Arcadie Suceveanu, Iulian Filip, Leo Butnaru, Eugen Cioclea, Dumitru Crudu, Vitalie Raileanu, etc.

According to President of the Union of Writers of Moldova (USM), Arcadie Suceveanu, this anthology focuses on literary phenomenon of Moldova and presents a wide range of names from different generations. "It is an excessively generous selection, but today we have established with translator Daniel Ionita to publish in perspectives more anthologies and author books," said Arcadie Suceveanu.

Besides, writer Leo Butnaru has said that this book also has a document valence, offering possibility that the poetry of Moldova can be read on other continents. Within context, Romanian writer Alex Stefanescu notes in book preface that this volume "carries us into the world of poetry from Bessarabia, and this time not only us, connoisseurs of the Romanian language, but also the ones which have not had luck to know this beautiful and heroic language since childhood."
