177 cases of measles confirmed in Moldova

Chisinau, 3 September /MOLDPRES/- A number of 177 cases of measles were confirmed in early August. Thus, the orange code of measles remains in the country.
According to the National Agency for Public Health, no new cases of measles were recorded in the first two days of September. In August, 140 cases were confirmed and another 83 suspects are under investigation. Currently, patients are isolated and under medical supervision.
The areas affected by measles during the last week are: Ceadâr-Lunga, Vulcăneşti, Ungheni, Taraclia, Cahul, Hânceşti, Cantemir and Ocnita.
The authorities announced in late August the Orange Code of measles throughout the country and noted that children without vaccine would not be admitted to kindergartens and schools.
Measles can only be prevented by vaccination. In Moldova, vaccination is carried out with the combined vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella (ROR) at one year, 6-7 years and 14-15 years. Vaccination is free for all eligible persons. In the last ten years, the rate of immunization in Moldova was 95 percent, and now it is up to 87 percent. Outbreaks of measles also are in neighboring Ukraine and Romania.
