Moldova as part of low-fertility countries, according to report

Chisinau, 19 October /MOLDPRES/- Moldova is part of the low fertility country category, where couples have less than two children, below the required level, according to data of the World Population Report 2018.

Sociological research examines the fertility trends in the world and the factors influencing people's decisions to have children or not, and was presented in Chisinau by the leadership of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection.

State Secretary Boris Gilca said that Moldova is currently undergoing demographic changes with a low birth rate, working-age mortality, population aging and migratory flows, especially people of reproductive age. "This report will help us make policies meant to improve the demographic situation in our country. With the support of our development partners, we will work to provide people with decent healthcare, education and jobs throughout life," he said.

The Chisinau authorities have taken in recent years much of the international recommendations and integrated them into national policies. Thus, Moldova is one of the first countries in the region that has adopted a National Program on Reproductive Rights and Health that ensures the right of women and men, especially the most vulnerable, to modern contraception. New provisions have been included in national policies that grant fathers the right to paternity leave, which gives them the opportunity to get more involved in their children's lives.

Statistics show that in 2017 over 30,000 children were born in Moldova, 4,000 less than the previous year.
