Afghanistan war veterans from Moldova to be awarded Commemorative Cross

Chisinau, 6 February /MOLDPRES/ - More than 8,500 Afghanistan war veterans will receive the Commemorative Cross, Participant in Combat Actions in Afghanistan (1979-1989). About two million lei has been allocated from the state budget to this end.
According to the Defence Ministry, the distinction will be awarded at ceremonies organized all over Moldova on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the withdrawal of the limited contingent of Soviet military troops from Afghanistan, as well as in order to stimulate the war veterans who participated in combat actions in Afghanistan (1979-1989).
The Commemorative Cross was elaborated by the Union of Afghanistan War Veterans from Moldova and the National Commission for Heraldry.
The Defence Ministry distributed the distinctions to the military and territorial centres from Balti, Cahul, Causeni, Chisinau, Edinet, Hancesti, Orhei, Soroca, Straseni, Taraclia and Ungheni.
A string of activities, such as rallies, concerts, religious services, setting memorial plaques in education institutions, holding meetings of veterans with seasoned servicemen and topic-related exhibitions, will take place throughout Moldova this year.
The 30th anniversary of the withdrawal of the limited contingent of Soviet military troops from Afghanistan will be marked on 15 February 2019.
