Over 600 tons of pesticides from Transnistria to be liquidated with OSCE support

Chisinau, 17 December /MOLDPRES/- Over six hundred tons of obsolete pesticides from the Transnistrian region will be evacuated and destroyed, according to a project supported by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). Its details were discussed on 16 December at a meeting between Minister of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Ion Perju and Head of OSCE Mission to Moldova Claus Neukirch.
According to OSCE representatives, 12 locations have already been identified from where this amount of pesticides is to be collected. The procedure for examining the types of pesticides, their repacking and disposal will start in January 2020.
In accordance with the provisions of the program, the Environmental Agency will be the main institution responsible for monitoring the process, verifying the identified pesticide categories and issuing export notifications for each batch of toxic chemicals.
The project Elimination and destruction of obsolete pesticides from the Transnistrian region, Phase 2 was launched in February 2016 in order to carry out a detailed assessment of the quantity of pesticides, chemical analysis and repacking of all types and quantities of pesticides remaining in the Transnistrian region and subsequently incineration outside Moldova. The total cost of the project is estimated at 959 thousand euros. In phase I of the project, 105 tons of obsolete pesticides have been repacked, evacuated and removed, from three warehouses in the Râbnița district.
