Parliamentary Association Committee Moldova - EU reiterates importance of continuing ambitious reform agenda by Chisinau authorities

Chisinau, 20 December /MOLDPRES/- The statement and recommendations of the Parliamentary Association Committee Moldova - the European Union were approved on Thursday, in Strasbourg, at the end of the seventh meeting of this structure, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.

Regarding the implementation of the Association Agreement and the reforms in the Republic of Moldova, the Parliamentary Association Committee noted that it takes note of the latest developments in our country and reiterates the importance of continuing the ambitious reform agenda, meant to firmly anchor the country on its European path. The approved document recommends focusing efforts on strengthening the independence of state institutions, ensuring the separation of powers in the state, the independence of the prosecutor's office and the judiciary, the fight against corruption and improving the living conditions of citizens.

In terms of the electoral processes and the electoral legislation, the Parliamentary Association Committee welcomes the recent legislative changes to the electoral system in the Republic of Moldova and takes note of the progress made on the way the local elections were held in October 2019.

The statement also refers to the general aspects of the Eastern Partnership and the Transnistrian problem, as well as to the resilience and future of EU-Moldova relations.

The 7th meeting of the Parliamentary Association Committee Moldova - EU, co-chaired by Mihai Popșoi from the Moldovan parliament and Siegfried Mureșan from the European Parliament, was held in Strasbourg on December 18-19. The parliamentary delegation was made up of: Mihai Popșoi - Co-Chair of the Committee, deputy speaker, Igor Munteanu – deputy head of the committee, chairman of the Committee on Public Finance, Gaik Vartanean – deputy head of the committee, member of the Foreign Policy and European Integration Commission and Sergiu Sirbu - member of the commission, member of the legal committee on rules and immunities.
