Tiraspol bans movement of vehicles with Moldovan registration numbers in breakaway Transnistrian republic

Chisinau, 17 January /MOLDPRES/ - The authorities of the breakaway Transnistrian Moldovan republic today informed that, starting from 24 January 2020, they would ban the vehicles with the Moldovan registration numbers from transiting and crossing the so-called control points from the Transnistrian segment of the border with Ukraine.  

According to a press release by the so-called foreign affairs ministry from Tiraspol, the decision is a response to the suspension by the Moldovan authorities, starting from 10 January 2020, of the earlier provided facilities to the drivers from the Transnistrian region, who will have to process acts issued in Moldova, in order to have access to the international traffic.   

This week, the Bureau for Reintegration Policies from Chisinau informed that, as of 10 January, the enforcement of the temporary exception as regards the control measures for the touring cars from Moldova’s Transnistrian region had been ceased.

„This measure is taken, in order to assess the efficiency of the functionality of the points of registration of transport means from the Tiraspol and Rabnita and of the registration of vehicles from the Transnistrian region at the Public Property Agency, as well as to inform citizens about the need of proper registration of the transport units owned by them and get the “neutral” registration plates, as well as the registration certificates and driver’s licences of the model established,” the Bureau’s communiqué reads.  

President Igor Dodon today came up with a reaction to this decision.

„I have had a phone conversation with Vadim Krasnoselsky and we agreed to urgently find solutions, in order not to allow the worsening of the situation concerning the movement of transport and eventual difficulties for the citizens. We established that the institutions in charge urgently identify solutions, in order to avoid a crisis situation,” according to the Moldovan president’s page on a social network.    

The president noted that “categorically, the citizens from both banks of Dniester must not be hit, and a result of the dialogue between Chisinau and Tiraspol, all the difficult subjects and situations will be solved.”
