Municipality not to increase price of urban transport by minibus - Chisinau mayor says

Chisinau, 24 February /MOLDPRES/- Chisinau mayor Ion Ceban asked the Prosecutor General's Office to investigate the activity of minibus owners who do not comply with their contractual obligations to Chisinau city hall.

At today’s weekly meeting of the municipal services, Ceban said he will not give in to interest groups which want to increase the price for transport by minibus.

He asked the Chisinau city hall legal department to find options for termination of contracts with private urban transport companies on strike. "The initiators of this strike are businessmen who have not invested in the means of transport owned by them in order to respect a minimum quality necessary for urban passenger transport", he said.

Private carriers on 24 urban transport routes are on strike as a protest against the refusal of municipal authorities to increase the tariff for a minibus trip.

The current tariff of three lei was set up in 2006, based on a decision of the Chisinau Municipal Council.

According to the calculations of the carriers, the price of a trip by minibus in Chisinau municipality, which corresponds to all the requirements of security, comfort and convenience, should be 9.81 lei. At the same time, they note that in the current conditions the tariff should be six lei.
