Chisinau, 27 February /MOLDPRES/ - President Igor Dodon on 26 February held a meeting with the members of the consultative council of experts on the justice system’s reform, set up under a decree by Moldova’s president No 1313-VIII from 30 October 2019.
According to the presidential press service, the sides exchanged opinions on the latest developments in the justice sector, especially on the dimension of the last decision by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) on convicting Moldova in the case of the Gemenii (The Twins) stock company. Another subject of major importance was the process of adjusting the legislation in the field of work of the Superior Council of Magistracy, as well as prospects of the system of general assessment of judges.
The interlocutors repeatedly highlighted the need to adjust the actions of the Moldovan authorities in the justice sector to the recommendations by Venice Commission experts, as well as the ones of the Group of States Against Corruption (GRECO). The head of state noted that the concerned measures were to a high degree necessary for creating a truthful and functional system, in line with the international standards.
At the same time, the exchange of opinions within the Council generated a joint conclusion, according to which the ECHR’s decisions are to be fulfilled. The participants in the discussion pointed out, however, the fact that the latest events imposed the need to identify an efficient mechanism which would prevent the adoption of court rulings contrary to the European Convention of Human Rights and would give possibility to recover the damage caused to the state by the people who are guilty of the files lost at ECHR.
