Chisinau, 16 March /MOLDPRES/ - President Igor Dodon, in a today’s appeal to the citizens, demanded that the parliament holds a meeting to decree the state of emergency in Moldova.

The president informed that he had asked the government to make a petition to the MPs to hold a meeting as early as in the next hours and declare national state of emergency. ‘’It is necessary that we take this measure, so that the state’s institutions can act as quickly as possible, do not come across bureaucratic impediments and if we face an alarming increase in the number of cases in certain regions, we can immediately take the measures needed to isolate the hotbeds. Yet, I assure all citizens that the measures taken will be communicated and explained in detail, so that the adaptation to them can be made as well as possible,’’ Dodon said.

He also announced a string of measures for traders, as well as for economic agents. Dodon warned that those trying to take advantage from the situation triggered by COVID-19 would be sanctioned.

Under the legislation in force, the state of emergency is declared at a proposal by the president or government of Moldova. The duration of the state of emergency does not exceed 60 days and, depending on the evolution of the situation, the head of state or the cabinet can demand that the parliament prolongs or shortens the duration of the state of emergency, as well as extends or diminishes its action area.
