International Nurses Day marked in Moldova

Chisinau, 12 May /MOLDPRES/ - Those over 20,000 medical assistants from Moldova today were congratulated by the state’s leadership on the occasion of the International Nurses Day. The holiday is unusual, as it is marked during the COVID-19 pandemic.   

Prime Minister Ion Chicu, Health, Labour and Social Protection Minister Viorica Dumbraveanu, the representative of the World Health Organizations Office in Moldova, Igor Pokanevych, the rector of the Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Emil Ceban, and over 250 medical assistants from all medical institutions of Moldova participated in an online meeting, held on this occasion.    

Nurses and midwives received 257 diplomas on behalf of the parliament and government on the occasion of their professional day, as a token of gratitude for the contribution brought to the improvement of the quality of medical cares.  

„This year, the COVID-19 epidemic prompted people to understand how important the medical system is for the medical employees. We thank you from the bottom of the heart for devotion, for modesty, for care and for the daily self-sacrifice,’’ Ion Chicu said.   

„You daily fight in the first line for the life of each man, from the birth and during all lifetime. Enthusiasm, courage and love for people are read in your eyes. Your work is more than a profession, it is a noble mission. You have my every appreciation and the one of the entire team of the Ministry, for the courage, kindness and professionalism with which you treat and take care of each patient,’’ Viorica Dumbraveanu stressed.     

As many as 1,197 cases of infection with COVID-19 among health system empoloyees have been confirmed in the last months, among whom: 285 physicians, 438 nurses, 64 doctor’s or surgeon’s assistants, one para-physician, 19 pharmacists, 390 people of auxiliary staff.

The International Nurses Day has been marked worldwide on 12 May ever since 1899, at an initiative by the International Council of Nurses. In Moldova, the International Nurses Day has been marked since 1994.
