Procedure of accession to office of prosecutor general changed in Moldova

Chisinau, 24 December /MOLDPRES/ - The procedure of accession to the office of prosecutor general or chief prosecutor of the specialized prosecutor’s offices was changed. The parliament today approved a draft law on the amendment of the Law on the Prosecutor’s Office in the first reading.
Under the draft, people with professional experience of ten years in the law sector, gained both in Moldova and abroad, can run for the office of prosecutor general or head of specialized prosecutor’s offices.
Also, the draft law sees the setting up of an independent commission, made up of people from outside the system, which is to be involved in the procedure of appointment of the chief prosecutor from the specialized prosecutor’s offices. This Commission will be made up of five members: one member nominated by the Justice Ministry, one – by the Moldovan president and three members nominated by the Superior Council of Prosecutors (CSP).
At the same time, this draft sees also the regulation of the way of cessation of the office of acting prosecutor general. Respectively, at the expiration of 12 months following the appointment of the acting prosecutor general, if no contest was held for the appointment of a prosecutor general, CSP can put forward to the Moldovan president a new candidate, for exercising the office of acting prosecutor general.
