Chisinau, 16 January /MOLDPRES/ - Large-scale protests took place in Chisinau today.

Tens of thousands of people today protested against the decision of President Nicolae Timofti to nominate acting Information Technology and Communications Minister Pavel Filip for the office of prime minister. At the same time, the citizens demanded that the authorities organise snap elections.

Supporters of the Dignity and Truth Platform protested on the Great National Assembly Square (PMAN). They demanded that the governance continues the European integration and nominates an upright prime minister.

"We have been betrayed again. These are decisive days for our country. The situation depends on us, the citizens, the way we will mobilise in these hours. Let us defend our future and the future of our children. We want to live in a democratic state. Now, the only solution for Moldova is organisation of snap polls," the head of the Great National Assembly Council, Andrei Nastase, said.

Backers of the Party of Socialists (PSRM) and Our Party (PN) protested outside the parliament building. They shouted anti-government slogans and demanded snap parliamentary elections.

"The government representatives hope that we will lose heart, but we will not give up. Our today's rally is the last drop which should make the lawmakers understand that they must not "play with the fire", but fulfill the wish of the people. We want just snap parliamentary elections, the people has reached the limit," PSRM leader Igor Dodon said.

"Presently, it is important that the citizens unite and say "no to the new parliamentary majority!" If we are united and oppose, this government will yield. We should resist up to the end, so that the state power belongs to the people," the leader of Our Party, Renato Usatii, said.

Today is the fourth day of protests in the centre of Chisinau, after the new parliamentary majority first put forward the candidacy of Vladimir Plahotniuc for the office of prime minister and then the one of Pavel Filip.
