Platform of parliamentary control of road safety in Moldova convenes into meeting

Chisinau, 30 March /MOLDPRES/ – The President of Parliament supports the need for a national entity for road safety management and introduction of an educational road safety module, starting with the pre – school cycle. On this issue and other aspects of road traffic safety, today, were discussed by Parliamentary Road Safety Monitoring Platform, held at the initiative of the speaker Andrian Candu, Ambassador of Road Safety in Moldova, , the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.
According to Speaker, in the process of road rehabilitation, started by authorities, it is vital to take into account road safety component. In this context, he mentioned the need to set up the Road Safety Agency, the Road Safety Fund and the database on estimation of high – risk road sections.
Attending the meeting, there were MPs, World Bank Country Director in Moldova, Anna Akhalkats, representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Automobil Club Moldova, as well as officials from the Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure, Ministry of Education, Culture and Research, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Internal Affairs, etc.
The road safety authorities submitted reports on road rehabilitation at national level, actions taken to ensure road children's education, road accident statistics, etc. At their turn, representative of Automobil Club Moldova spoke about educational package for road safety teaching, which is successfully implemented in the European countries.
Among violations of traffic rules that generated most accidents, participations listed speeds inappropriate for road conditions, pedestrian preference, over speeding, driving under influence of alcohol. According to a World Bank report, the cost of living for a Moldovan citizen was estimated at $675 thousand.
According to statistics, there were 2,512 road accidents with 273 deceased persons and 2,846 persons who suffered various traumas in 2017. There were involved 350 children in road traffic accidents, out of which 12 died, 80 were seriously injured, and 237 were mild injured.
Andrian Candu was appointed Ambassador of Road Safety in 2017 by Eastern Alliance for Safe and Sustainable Transport. The Republic of Moldova signed the UN Resolution on declaring 2011 – 2020 "Decade of Road Safety Action" and assumed the resulting responsibilities, including objective of reducing accidents by 50 per cent by 2020, access to a safe, accessible and sustainable transport by 2030. In 2017, Andrian Candu, as a road safety ambassador, promoted an information and awareness – raising campaign with civil society partners. During this campaign, there were organised exhibitions, materials on the risks of over – speeding, distributed reflections and steps taken to provide supplementary road markings for pedestrian crossings, particularly in the area of schools.
