Film about famous departed Moldovan poet made in Latvia

Chisinau, 10 April /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova and Latvia, united by the friendship of Leons Briedis and Grigore Vieru (departed Moldovan poet), have become the subject of a movie, The Desert Waves, presented in Riga within a private screening at the museum of writer Imants Ziedonis. The event was organized in the Latvian capital last week, with the support of Moldova’s Embassy in Latvia.
According to the Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry’s public diplomacy, strategic communication and media interaction service, the documentary, The Desert Waves, with the protagonist, Latvian poet, a novelist, essayist, literary critic and publisher, translator of prose and poetry Leons Briedis, tells about the poet’s spiritual relation with Moldova, the value of Vieru’s poems for the Latvian nation, especially the poem, “În limba ta” (In Your Language), which became the “unofficial anthem of the national revival” in Latvia (“Dzimta Valoda”).
The film, The Desert Waves, is directed by a member of Cinema Men’s Union of Moldova, Olga Lucovnicova, who is in Riga within the Erasmus+ programme. The movie was made in cooperation with the Latvian Centre for Youth Development and backed by Moldova’s Embassy in Latvia.
Leons Briedis and his wife Maria Briede-Macovei were awarded the Civic Merit medal, under a decree by Moldova’s president on 12 October 2016, as a token of high appreciation for contribution to the development of the Moldovan-Latvian friendship relations and merits for the deepening of the inter-cultural ties.
