Chisinau, 21 April /MOLDPRES/ - The premiere of the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, stage management by Sandu Grecu, took place at the Satiricus I.L. Caragiale Theatre from Chisinau on 20 April evening.
Contacted by MOLDPRES, the theatre’s director, stage manager of the play Sandu Grecu said that it was the first experience in the institution he leads to stage a play by Shakespeare. Grecu noted that the tragedy Hamlet had been one of the masterpieces of Shakespeare, which had been staged in the Romanian language, in Romania and Moldova alone, about 40 times in the last two centuries.
“Obviously, thousands and thousands of stagings of this masterpiece have been registered in the world. We had big emotions. We wanted to make a modern play, to come up with a Hamlet of the 21st century, who might change something in our present world. The philosophic tirade: To be or not to be. That is the question! comes this tragedy. This play is very important for us. Due to it, we have discovered more young actors,” Sandu Grecu said.
Attending the premiere, writer and dramatist Andrei Strambeanu said that what Sandu Grecu managed to do in this play had been above all expectations.
”This is an extraordinary play. I could not imagine that Sandu Grecu, who deals with satire, can make such modern and organic play by Shakespeare. He approaches here also the issue of infidelity. I saw all variants of this play staged in Moldova. Sandu Grecu concentrated the action from those five acts into a single act. He presented us a contemporary Hamlet. This is a dynamic and always up-to-date play,” Andrei Strambeanu added.
Among the actors, there are Alexandru Crîlov playing the part of Hamlet, as well as Irina Rusu playing the role of Gertruda, etc.
The suits are made by Ecaterina Mihalache and the choreography is signed by Dumitru Tanmosan.
