Chisinau, 04 May /MOLDPRES/ – There have occurred over 1,300 cases of acute diarrheal diseases in Moldovan capital during the first four months of 2018, most of these infections have had children, according to data from Centre for Public Healthcare (CSP) in Chisinau.

The epidemiologist of CSP in Chisinau, Larisa Apostolova, said that during reference period, there were 66 multiple outbreaks of acute diarrheal disease and a multifrequency disease caused by staphylococci.

The doctor did not specify if these outbreaks were recorded among institutionalised children but advised parents to be cautious, especially in summer months when frequency of these infections is traditionally increased.

According to the CSP's information and media communication service, situation on acute diarrheal disease in Moldova is considered unfavourable. There are reported almost 20,000 cases of illness yearly, including dozens of deaths of children under five years of age.

According to cited source, acute diarrheal diseases include: cholera, dysentery, rotavirus infection, salmonellosis, typhoid fever and yersinitis.

The clinical signs of this group of infections are different, but all cause high fever of up to 40°C, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, general weakness and headache. At children, especially babies up to 12 months, clinical signs develop faster than at adults, and the health condition may worsen in a short time.

In case of clinical signs of acute diarrheal disease, it is not permitted self – medication, especially when with children. The basic recommendation is urgent consultation of family doctor prescribing appropriate treatment.
