Number of persons suffering from allergies increases recently in Moldova, say experts

Chisinau, 07 May /MOLDPRES/ – The number of medical appeals for minors and adults suffering from various types of allergies is increasing traditionally in May, when streets of Chisinau are poppy, and strawberries, cherries and cucumbers are sold in markets. The statement was made for the agency by the head of Department of Allergy at the Mother and Child Institute, Tatiana Gorelco.

According to the cited source, number of people suffering from various types of allergies has increased recently, with several factors including climate change.

"Traditionally, summer temperatures bring with them an increase in addressing to a doctor with various types of allergies. The most common are allergies to pollen, poppy leaves and food, mostly caused by seasonal fruits. We currently have 15 babies in allergology department, but number of consultations offered by our specialists is much higher," said Gorelco.

The specialist also came up with more recommendations for pollen allergens, but also for poppies: If allergy symptoms occur, self – healing should be avoided, and walks in the morning are not recommended when pollen and its concentration is increased, windows of the houses have to be equipped with nets as often as possible, and after each exit, people suffering from allergies have to change their clothes and take a shower.

According to World Health Organisation (WHO) data, over 220 million people worldwide suffer from some form of allergy. According to estimates of the European Academy of Allergy and Immunology Diseases, prevalence of food allergy has doubled over recent decade, and at European level, number of people suffering from food allergy exceeds 17 million.
