Chisinau, 11 May /MOLDPRES/ – The report of Ombudsman, Mihail Cotorobai, on respect for human rights and freedoms in Moldova in 2017 was heard in Parliament today.
According to Cotorobai, ombudsman examined several complaints in 2017, largely related to violation of right to fair justice, healthcare and a clean environment.
"One of he most serious cases on which we conducted individual investigations is that of Andrei Braguta, that died in penitentiary, and that of Adeline Bulat. After examining these cases, we determined that citizens' minimum guarantees were breached and we also came up with a series of recommendations to authorities," said Cotorobai.
The Ombudsman stated that over 2017 several people complained that their right to healthcare had been violated, but also to a clean environment. "Environmental problems have been reported at waste box in Bubuieci. There we even had mediation talks with authorities and population, but there are more situations in the country. The problem of water quality is the same, an important one for Moldova, because only 30 per cent of the country's population has access to centralized water sources," added Cotorobai.
According to the source, in 2017, following intervention of the People's Advocate, hepatitis patients were granted the right to receive state treatment.
With a shorter report in front of MPs today came Child's rights advocate, Maia Banarescu, which said that most violations reported by children are the right to healthcare, education and citizenship. She specified that Moldova needs a strategy that would educate parents how to behave, but also what decisions to take for the good of children when deciding to divorce.
The hearing of report in plenary of Parliament attended, the UN Resident Coordinator, Dafina Gercheva, UNDP Permanent Representative in the Republic of Moldova, and President of the Council for Prevention and Elimination of Discrimination and Equality, Ian Feldman.
The approval of Parliament's draft resolution on the report has been postponed to the next sitting after examination of amendments tabled by MPs.
