Judges to be appointed to office based on new rules in Moldova

Chisinau, 23 May /MOLDPRES/ - Judges will be appointed to office based on new rules, according to a draft approved by the cabinet today.
Under the document, the contest for holding the vacant offices will be organized twice a year. In the process of selecting candidates, who are to be appointed as judges for the first time ever, the mark got at the exam taken before the graduation commission of the National Justice Institute will represent at least 50 per cent of the contest average and not more than 50 per cent of the points provided by the college for selection.
At the same time, the obligatory condition for the candidate for the judge position is to hold a higher education master diploma in the law field. Also, the candidate for the judge office who opts for the promotion to a higher law court or for transfer to another court could be assessed also by the Superior Council of Magistracy. The weight of the result of this assessment will not exceed 20 per cent of the contest average.
Persons appointed as judge for the first time ever will choose from the vacant positions available, in the descending order of the points got at the contest.
Also, for the promotion and transfer of judges, decision-makers set a rule according to which judges will compete with at least 50 per cent of the result of evaluation of the work and not more than 50 per cent of the average mark given by the college for selection and, according to the case, by the Superior Council of Magistracy.
The draft also sees amendment of the legal framework, so that the Superior Council of Magistrates cooperates with the civil society and mass media to inform the public about the work of the Council and law courts.
