Council of Europe to provide Moldova with assistance to carry out justice reforms

Chisinau, 25 May /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova will benefit from every needed assistance on behalf of the Council of Europe to carry out reforms in the justice sector. Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland has given assurances to this effect at a meeting with Justices Minister Victoria Iftodi, on a working visit to Strasbourg.
The two officials discussed the situation in Moldova, reforms implemented in the justice sector and assistance provided by the Council of Europe to Moldova.
The Justice Minister informed the European official about the progress made in reforming justice, fulfillment of the commitments taken by Moldova when joining the Council of Europe, measures undertaken in fighting corruption and the present situation in the human rights sector. Also, the sides discussed the Small Justice Reform and stressed the importance of the expertise provided by the Council of Europe in the legislative creation process.
The justice minister noted that decision-makers were presently working on a new long-term strategy in the justice field. In the context, Victoria Iftodi emphasized the importance of the assessment made by the Council of Europe concerning the implementation of the Justice Sector Reform Strategy for 2011-2016. The minister gave assurances that the recommendations by the evaluation mission would be transposed in the new strategy.
Also, Iftodi asked to boost efforts to ensure full carrying out of the decisions by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), especially the ones dealing with the Transnistrian region. The officials appreciated the importance of enhancing the confidence between the two banks of Dniester and the need to give an impetus to the dialogue.
For his part, Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland showed contented with the existence of political will to bring positive transformations into the process of Moldova’s modernization and democratization and gave assurances that he would back the country’s efforts to this end. Also, referring to ECHR’s decisions on the Transnistrian region, the official set forth commitment to support actions on their enforcement.
Justice Minister Victoria Iftodi is on a working visit to Strasbourg on 23-25 May.
