Chisinau, 25 May /MOLDPRES/- The rescue and fire post in Copanca village, Causeni district, was inaugurated today, after being renovated and equipped with modern equipment with the support of the EU.

The EU has earmarked over 68,000 euros to Copanca post via the “Support to the confidence-building measures” programme, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme. At the same time, the headquarters of mayoralty, which hosts the post, was provided from European funds with biomass heating system under the Energy and Biomass Project.

The rescue and fire post in Copanca serves nine villages with a population of over 15 thousand. Four of these localities: Chițcani, Cremenciug, Zahorna and Merenești are administered de facto by Tiraspol. “The results of this project are successful. The EU contributes to facilitating the Transnistrian conflict settlement and boost confidence between Chisinau and Tiraspol by supporting joint initiatives such as this renovation in Copanca. These initiatives improve the welfare of the population on both banks via cooperation activities. These are EU confidence building measures,” EU Ambassador to Moldova Peter Michalko said.

At present, this post has all conditions, including a room that can accommodate flood victims, dining room and a gym. It also benefitted from high performance equipment.

The Copanca mayoralty provided the post with a special vehicle „outlander pickup” that rescuers will be able to quickly reach inaccessible destinations.

The post is one of over 80 infrastructure objects renovated via the EU-funded programme. The project is meant to consolidate trust between residents of both banks of the Dniestre river by involving local leaders, business representatives and civil society in joint business development projects and improvement of social infrastructure.
