Rare species from two Moldovan districts to first ever hold passports

Chisinau, 30 May /MOLDPRES/ - Over 120 rare species of flora and fauna from the Stefan Voda and Soroca districts will have passports, as a result of a project backed by international environmental organizations. At the same time, guides of rare habitats from the two administrative and territorial units have been worked out.
These publications represent a novelty in Moldova. The editing was possible with the support of the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) project, Integration of priorities of conservation of biodiversity in policies of territorial planning and practices of use of lands in Moldova, financed by the Global Environment Fund. (GEF).
“The passports of rare species help monitor and protect the local biodiversity The document contains data which describes the species, including the geographical positioning and the protection measures needed,” a project manager at UNDP Moldova, Alexandru Rotaru, has said. Materials are useful for local public administration representatives, specialists in the fields of environmental protection, forestry, agriculture and water resources, lands’ managers, environmental non-governmental organizations, teachers and students.
The tourist guides for the two districts contain 250 tourist attractions from Soroca and 200 from Stefan Voda. The guides include information about relevant local destinations, protected natural areas, useful data about museums, popular craftsmen, accommodation units, etc.
“Protected areas, variety of landscapes, numerous rare species provide a full image and adds value to symbolical attractions from these districts, such as the Soroca Fortress and Purcari Winery. Thus, visitors can see a lot of novel things, one can admire only in these eco-tourist destinations of Moldova,” the author of the publications, expert Viorel Miron, said. The guides will be distributed to schools, libraries and museums of the Stefan Voda and Soroca districts.
The UNDP project is implemented in four communities from the Soroca and Stefan Voda districts during 2015-2018. Among the most important achievements of the project, there is the creation of 102 hectares of ecological corridors through the afforestation of degraded lands. At the same time, 100 hectares of pastures have been re-established through the carrying out of works to improve the grass carpet.
