Top European bank to back Moldova in carrying out development reforms

Chisinau, 30 May /MOLDPRES/ - The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is one of the strategic partners of Moldova, as it provides continuous support to the national authorities in key sectors, including the economic and social development, science and innovation, rehabilitation of  infrastructure, backing the integration into European energy markets and diversifying energy sources. Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister  Tudor Ulianovschi has made statements to this effect at a meeting with Head of EBRD Office in Moldova Angela Sax, the Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry’s public diplomacy, strategic communication and media interaction service has reported.  

In particular, Minister Tudor Ulianovschi highlighted the support provided by EBRD to improve Moldova’s energy security, in line with the commitments taken within the Energy Community Treaty and Moldova-EU Association Agreement.   

The officials exchanged opinions on optimizing the bilateral cooperation between Moldova and EBRD through diverse projects backed by the Bank, as well as possibility of initiating new collaboration programmes, proceeding from the priorities of the country’s development strategies, carried out by the government. In the context, Tudor Ulianovschi and Angela Sax agreed on maintaining an intensive communication for a more intense preparation of a meeting of the foreign affairs and European integration minister with the EBRD management, scheduled for next June.    

For her part, the head of the EBRD office in Moldova appreciated the Moldovan authorities’ efforts to carry out programmes for Moldova’s reformation and modernization, especially through improving the business environment, reducing bureaucracy and ensuring the stability in the banking sector. Angela Sax stressed that this transformed Moldova into an attractive destination for foreign investors. She confirmed EBRD’s willingness to further back Moldova to implement the reforms aimed at ensuring the sustainable economic development.  

During 2017, EBRD provided Moldova with financial assistance worth 131 million euros to implement ten projects. Since the beginning of its work in Moldova, EBRD has financed 122 projects worth more than 1.2 billion euros.
