Jewish history museum in Moldova to be opened in Chisinau

Chisinau, 8 June /MOLDPRES/- A museum of Jewish history of Moldova will be opened in the capital.

A statement in this regard was made today by Minister of Education, Culture and Research, Monica Babuc in a press briefing on the progress of the implementation of the action plan of the Republic of Moldova in the field of education and commemorating the Holocaust, together with Rabbi Andrew Baker, personal representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office on Combating Anti-Semitism.

According to the Moldovan official, the goal of creating this museum institution is to highlight the contribution of the Jewish community to the development of our society at various historical stages, to know and to promote Jewish ethnics, and to preserve the memory of the Holocaust through thematic exhibitions of museum.

Babuc reviewed the most relevant activities that the ministry organizes in partnership with the Jewish community in Moldova, namely: commemorating the victims of the Holocaust every January 27, inviting Jewish artists to the events organized by the ministry, the exhibition of the visual art competition "The Colors of Genocide" at the College of Fine Arts "Alexandru Plămădeală" and others.

At the same time, other topics related to the preservation and protection of monuments dedicated to Holocaust victims, the maintenance of Jewish cemeteries, the review of the curriculum documents for the development of educational policies on the Holocaust study, etc. were addressed. Babuc mentioned that a Holocaust training course will be set in schools, which has led to a seminar, where 200 history teachers were trained.

For his part, Andrew Baker expressed gratitude and satisfaction regarding the implementation of the action plan organized by the ministry, and especially the intention to open a museum of Jewish history in Moldova in Chisinau.

He said that such museums are in Bucharest, Moscow, Budapest, Paris, London, Vilnius, Riga and other capitals in the world.

The official is visiting Moldova on 7-9 June.
