Chisinau, 13 June /MOLDPRES/ – The first lab in Moldova where molecular – genetic investigations (DNA) can be carried out, including establishing paternity, identifying suspects and victims of catastrophes, was opened in Chisinau today. The new lab will work within Centre of Forensic Medicine (CML).
There will engaged legal experts biologists, employees of Department of forensic biology (SBML), specialising in molecular – genetic investigations and a specialist in molecular biology and genetics at the laboratory. The lab tests will have a degree of accuracy of 99.99 per cent and DNA expertise can be made at request of law enforcement bodies as well as of physicians.
"I am glad that finally, in Moldova, as in all European states, there will function such a lab. The CML assumes the liability to perform all tasks in close terms as to ensure its functionality," stated director of CML, Valeri Savciuc, at inauguration event.
Previously, Moldova did not have a DNA testing lab. The tests by other existing labs in Moldova without a laboratory status of judicial expertise could not be recognised as evidence in court, and law enforcement authorities encountered difficulties in investigating offences and had to resort to services of foreign labs.
There was allocated an amount of MDL 9.3 million for lab equipment, machinery, furniture and facilities.
