World Blood Donor Day marked in Moldova

Chisinau, 14 June /MOLDPRES/ - The World Blood Donor Day today is marked in Moldova through the organization of more social events. At the same time, blood donation campaigns are carried out in the Public Garden from Chisinau, in Cahul and Balti till 15:00.  

The goal of these actions is to raise the awareness of the society about the importance of donating blood voluntarily, without payment and systematically. The actions are aimed at forming lasting partnerships with the local public authorities, non-governmental organizations and representatives of the community to back the effort of blood donation’s promotion.

At a meeting of the parliament’s standing bureau on 13 June, Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu made an appeal to the MPs and civil servants of the parliament’s Secretariat to join the blood donation campaign. “I invite you to take part in the generous act of donating blood, in order to provide hope of life to those needing help, as well as to encourage people to donate blood, through the example of politicians,” the speaker said. Or, more lawmakers and employees of the parliament’s Apparatus joined the speaker and donated blood today morning.  

Data by the National Blood Transfusion Centre shows that the needs of blood transfusion are fully covered in Moldova, with about 80,000 donations annually collected, which provide assistance to about 130,000 sick people. At the same time, 80 per cent of the donations are supplied by voluntary donors. Thus, the competent ministry has the goal to annually increase the number of voluntary donations by at least five per cent. The number of voluntary blood donations increased thrice against the previous years.    

The first World Blood Donation Day was marked for the first time ever in Johannesburg (South Africa) in 2004. At the same time, the decision on marking the World Blood Donation Day was taken at the 58th meeting of the World Health Organization, during which the member states unanimously declared the commitment and support for the voluntary blood donation.
