Moldovan authorities to enhance measures of prevention, managements of floods

Chisinau, 29 June /MOLDPRES/ - A cabinet’s decision on the approval of the national system of management, prevention and reducing the consequences of floods has been published in the Official Journal (Monitorul Oficial).
The document contains radiography of the situation in the field and sets a string of measures for the protection of residents and settlements from the harmful effects of the floods.
Among actions included in the conception, there are: working out floods risk maps, plans on management of the floods risk in the basis of the Dniester and Prut rivers, creation of a national system of monitoring and hydrological forecasts, as well as the implementation of the automated warning systems in the case of the breaking of dams at the hydro-technical knots Costesti-Stanca, Dubasari and the dam of the Vatra reservoir.
At the same time, the new document sees that, on the next period, the protection dams on the Dniester and Prut rivers, as well as on smaller rivers will be rehabilitated. Also, the state commits to promote compulsory insurances of buildings, farmlands and ways of communications placed in risk zones.
According to official data, the degree of Moldova’s exposing to floods is 40 per cent and up to 80 per cent in some regions. As many as 659 settlements with a population of over 100,000 residents are placed in floods danger zones. The latest floods with significant negative effects took place in 2008 and 2010.
