According to the Moldovan official, the documents elaborated by the competent institutions have the goal to eradicate gender stereotypes and differences. She also said that the first steps had been made, as women have already access at more leadership positions and at specialized infantry courses.
“Two ladies have recently become members of the Joint Control Commission – offices earlier held only by men,” Lesnic also said.
The deputy prime minister noted that another nice example of promoting desiderata related to peace and security are given by Moldova’s embassies. “Presently, we have real premises to boost the promotion of women in the security and defence sector, especially as there are already examples in the neighbour countries,” Lesnic said.
On 21 March 2018, the Moldovan government adopted a decision on the approval of a national programme on the implementation of the Resolution 1325 of the United Nations Security Council on Women and Peace and Security for 2018-2021. The resolution is aimed at solving problems faced by women in the security and defence sector, through the following specific objectives: reducing stereotypes dealing with women’s role; enhancing possibilities for women and men to combine the professional life with the family one; prevention and combating of discrimination, gender harassment and violence, enhancing women’s participation in the process of consolidation of peace and within peacekeeping missions.
The Resolution 1325 on Women and Peace and Security was passed unanimously in 2000 and is the first international framework document which highlights the impact of conflicts on women, recognizing the important role of women in establishing peace and ensuring security. The Resolution is compulsory for all UNO member states, without the need of its additional ratification.
