Moldovan PM meets Secretary General of Council of Europe

Chisinau, 03 July /MOLDPRES/ – Prime Minister, Pavel Filip, had a meeting with Secretary of State of the Council of Europe, Thorbjørn Jagland, in Strasbourg on 02 July. During the talks, the two officials exchanged views on existing political developments in Moldova and dialogue between Moldova and Council of Europe, the government's communication and protocol department has reported.
Pavel Filip and Thorbjørn Jagland analised the achievements after the first year of implementation of the Council of Europe Action Plan (CoE) for Moldova 2017 – 2020, officially launched in Chisinau on 30 May 2017. Especially, projects on prevention and combating discrimination, controlling of corruption by preventing corruption and law enforcement, promoting freedom of mass media and pluralism of opinions and criminal justice system. A special topic of the talks was the reform of the electoral system.
Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland reiterated the Council of Europe's support for Moldova and the need to intensify efforts to reform justice sector, focusing on independence, impartiality and integrity of magistrates, combating money laundering and corruption, guaranteeing free and fair electoral processes.
Also, there were discussed situation regarding non – validation of elections in Chisinau and announcement made by PM and SP on creation of a working group in Parliament for analysis of provisions regulating restrictions within electoral period. Secretary General Jagland confirmed the availability of CoE to provide legal expertise and share good practices of organisation in it.
