European Parliament adopts resolution on situation in Moldova

Chisinau, 5 July /MOLDPRES/ - The European Parliament today adopted a resolution on the political crisis in Moldova as a result of the invalidation of the local polls from Chisinau.
The resolution was passed with the votes of 343 MEPs out of 538 ones present in at the meeting. Another 35 lawmakers voted against and 160 ones abstained.
Under the document, the European Parliament “expresses deep concern about the ruling taken by the Supreme Court of Justice to cancel the results of the elections for the office of Chisinau city mayor, on dubious grounds and non-transparently.”
In this context, the European Parliament urges the European Commission to suspend both the payments provided for in the macro-financial assistance and the budgetary support for Moldova.
At the same time, the MEPs urged the Moldovan authorities “to fully carry out the recommendations by OSCE ODIHR and the ones of the Venice Commission on the electoral reform.”
On 4 July, the European Union Delegation in Chisinau informed that EU had suspended the payment of the first installment of the macro-financial assistance programme for Moldova.
