Moldovan parliament commemorates victims of Stalinist deportations

Chisinau, 06 July /MOLDPRES/ – The State Flag on the Moldovan Parliament building was in the middle, and the State Flags in front of the institution were linked with a mourning ribbon in remembrance of the ones which had suffered from the second wave of deportations in 1949, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.

On 06 July, throughout Moldova, it is declared the national mourning day and there are commemorated victims of Stalinist deportations. In all Moldovan localities, the flags will be lowered, a moment of silence will be preserved, and it will be organised laying flowers in memory of victims of Stalinist deportations.

Totally, there were three waves of mass deportations when people were loaded into trains and taken to Siberia and Kazakhstan. The deportation operation began on night of 12 – 13 June 1941. The second wave of mass deportations took place on 06 – 07 July 1949 and the third on 31 March – 01 April 1951. The exact figure is unknown of those ones which had suffered from that type of repression, while historians estimating the number of several hundred thousand deported persons.

Currently, there are over eight thousand deportees in Moldova.
