Chisinau, 6 July /MOLDPRES/ - ”By the vote adopted in the European Parliament on 5 July, a signal was given that the Moldovan citizens are not treated equally,” the leader of the Democratic Party of Moldova (PDM), Vlad Plahotniuc, said at the end of the PDM meeting today.

According to Plahotniuc, the resolution adopted in the European Parliament will not affect the European integration of Moldova. “PDM remains fully committed to the process of reforms and implementation of the good western practices in our country, no matter the political games due to be made in continuation. Today, I asked the colleagues from the government and parliament to revise also our cooperation with the European Union in the sense of improving and fostering it, beginning with the joint actions to a more open and more efficient communication. All reforms we have carried out so far had not only the goal to fulfill the commitments taken before the foreign partners, but also had the role to modernize Moldova. We assumed huge electoral costs, to implement these reforms; yet, we considered that it is worth taking this risk, as, for the long run, the effects will be beneficial for the people from Moldova,” Plahotniuc said.

In the context, the PDM leader noted that the International Monetary Fund provided a new installment to Moldova, after all commitments taken by the authorities had been fulfilled. “Also, we have fully carried out the commitments before the European Union; yet, a parliamentary group there which backs some opposition parties from Moldova ruled that the Moldovans should further suffer, only for some politicians to have electoral benefits at the future elections. Some people considered that they can resort to an unfair gesture against our citizens and punish them, on grounds that the government did not accept to get involved in the justice and determine the change of the ruling on the invalidation of the polls,” Plahotniuc added.

The PDM leader also said that the resolution passed by the European Parliament might decrease the Moldovan citizens’ confidence in the European Union. He specified that the government, as well as the parliamentary majority remained firmly committed on the way of reforms and European modernization of the country and remained open for cooperation with the foreign partners. “Even also after this unfair measure against the citizens of Moldova, PDM remains grateful for the European officials, who actively and efficiently cooperate with the government and our response will be one based on concrete results, just as so far,” the Democrats’ leader said.

On 5 July, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the political crisis in Moldova as a result of the invalidation of the local polls from Chisinau. The resolution was passed with the votes of 343 MEPs out of 538 ones present in at the meeting.

Under the document, the European Parliament “expresses deep concern about the ruling taken by the Supreme Court of Justice to cancel the results of the elections for the office of Chisinau city mayor and urges the European Commission to suspend both the payments provided for by the macro-financial assistance and the budgetary support for Moldova.”

Also on 5 July, the EU Delegation in Chisinau said that EU has suspended the payment of the first installment of the macro-financial assistance programme for Moldova.
