Wheat field burns after flash of lightning in south – eastern district of Moldova

Chisinau, 08 July /MOLDPRES/ – A field of about 10 hectares of wheat burned on 07 July evening in Stefan Voda district, after a flash of lightning.

According to the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI), the case occurred in locality Stefanesti. The wheat field caught fire after the lightning struck. The farmers managed to intervene and extinguished the fire with their own means, without the help of the firefighters.

Following the rapid intervention, it was managed to save another 200 hectares of wheat. As a result of this case, no one has suffered and all circumstances are to be established.

On 07 July, IGSU launched a fire – prevention campaign during the harvest. It aims at informing farmers about the risk of bonfire, as well as providing assistance in complying with fire safety rules. According to IGSU, in 2017 there were 10 bonfires in the cereal fields.
