Invalidation of local polls in Moldovan capital to be subjected to legislative expertise

Chisinau, 12 July /MOLDPRES/ - The invalidation of local polls will be subjected to a legislative expertise. The initiative belongs to Deputy Parliament Speaker Valeriu Ghiletchi, who has registered a draft decision to this end in parliament.
According to Ghiletchi, the situation concerning the invalidation of the local elections is widely discussed in the society and triggered a string of matters in dispute, especially in terms of restrictions and imperative norms in the Electoral Code and correct enforcement of these regulations.
“The decision to invalidate the polls led also to the adoption of a resolution by the European Parliament on 5 July 2018,” Ghiletchi noted.
In the context, the parliament’s juridical commission for rules and immunities will be empowered to carry out an expertise of the legal framework which stayed at the basis of the invalidation of the local elections in Chisinau. The commission will have at its disposal 60 days to present to parliament its conclusions and proposals, including on the improvement of the relevant normative framework, in order to ensure the integrity of the electoral process and strengthen the electoral rights of Moldova’s citizens.
Specialists of the Central Electoral Commission, representatives of the local and central public administration authorities, independent experts on behalf of the civil society, including experts from abroad, will be able to participate in the expert examination of the situation in the context of the invalidation of the local polls.
